Do you know what’s equally as important as your physical health as you grow older? Your brain health! It’s easy to forget about all the lifestyle factors that play important roles in improving and preserving your brain health, but as a senior, you should try to make it a priority. We’re sharing our top factors with you below that can help you keep your brain healthy and active as you age.

Get Good Sleep

Let’s start with the basics. Get a good night’s rest! Sleep is essential to helping your brain feel rested and refreshed the next day. Seniors should be trying to get at least 8 hours of high-quality sleep every night to improve their brain health.

Stay Active

Staying physically active can also work to keep your mind active. When you exercise daily, even if it’s something as easy as taking a walk, you’re helping your body AND mind grow stronger. Exercise gets rid of bad feelings like anxiety and instead releases endorphins that make your brain happy!

Journal

Write it out! Seriously. Get yourself a journal and practice writing out your thoughts, feelings, and frustrations every day or so. The act of physically writing these things out is therapeutic, and it can help you to relieve stress of the day. Less stress means a healthier brain.

Eat and Drink Healthy

For seniors, it’s a great idea to be intentional about what you are using to fuel your body. As you age, you need more things like Vitamin C, which you can get from oranges, peppers, vitamins, etc. You’ll also want to hydrate your body, so make sure you’re drinking enough water every day. Another important change is lessening your caffeine intake. Try making the switch from coffee to tea.

Talk to Other People

Having conversations and connecting with like-minded people regularly will work wonders for your brain! A great way to do this is to join a local organization or project to keep yourself social and talking to others often.
